850- gears suddenly stopped working 850 1996

Hi Everyone:

I have a 1996, 850. Last night, when I started it, I could not get it to go forward or backward. When I put it back in park, it rolled backwards until I put the emergency brake on. I towed it to my house. I am wondering if any one has insight about what could be happening.
