won't crank 850 1996

I drove Sven (my 96 850) to pick up my wife at work. When she came out I tried to start the car but it would even respond to the key. The dash lights came on but when I tried to engage the starter there was an electrical pop and then nothing. I got a jump and it started, but when driving home the radio would go off when I lifted off the gas pedal. When I put the charger on the battery at home the charger said the battery was fully charged. I could just buy a new battery but I think the alternator may be bad as well. Anybody see anything like this? This is the first hint of electrical weakness. Can the alternator fail this suddenly?
