01 S80 has fluctuating idle, stalls, and sometimes throttle does nothing S80

I was just driving across town when my 2001 S80 died at a stop sign. I restarted and it stalled immediately. Repeated this multiple times. Finally started it and kept it running by adding throttle to keep it above 1500 RPM. I was able to drive it like this for a bit then decided to pull over and have a look under the hood. The idle was fluctuating again and would drop to about 450 then increase to about 1000 then drop again,...after each drop, as it was recovering, it would squeek a bit.........almost as if it had a vacuum leak somewhere...........poked, jiggled and pulled at a few things and checked the Oil filler cap by unscrewing and re tightening it a few times....noting seemed to change. I got back in the car..revved it a few times and all of a sudden, the idle stabilized...........perfectly smoothe and level...............hmmm.....I put I tapped the accelerator again...........and nothing happened.........several more increasingly exaggerated throttle pumps......and still no change in engine speeed as if the car was equipped with a throttle cable which had just fallen off,.........or is a drive by wire set up with a now disconnected wire...........

I shut it off and restarted and now had a slight hunting idle and throttle was "reconnected".........I could now rev the engine again............I drove home (about 5 miles)....and it seemed normal all the way.

Anyone experienced this sort of behavior? Any suggestions?

Brian
