Coolant smell in cabin (98XC)

I have a 98 XC that smells like coolant when the heater is on. It seems to only come from the two center vents. I assume that it is the heater core in the dash leaking. I looked in the service manual and it seems to be quite a chore to get into that part of the car (removing the radio/dash/discharging the AC, etc.). I tried Bar's Leak, but it did no good. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what is is before I tear into the dash?
