1996 850 Climate Control: Possible to Retro-fit to Manual Control?

I have an 1996 850 GLT with electronic climate control (ECC). Long ago, the system developed an annoying defect where the temperature of the air coming out of the vents oscillates bewteen too warm and too cold with a period of four and a half minutes. Mechanics say take it to the dealer, and the dealer has proven to me that they can't diagnose the problem but would have no problem replacing parts with my checkbook if that's what I would like to do. They read the codes, but appparently this problem is a little more subtle than that.

I am wondering if it is possible to swap out the ECC unit with a unit that would let me use the same knobs to control the temperature manually - so that when I turn the temp knob - down is cold, up is hot, and in the middle is, well... in the middle. I think not all volvos of that vintage had the ECC, and maybe a 1995 could plug in and go. I don't know about the compatability of the two systems, however.

Any help would be appreciated,

Steve
