XC70 Bevel Gear Problems - What Years Worse? V70-XC70

I am thinking of getting a 200 XC70 with 78,000 on it. I have heard that the bevel gear problems were worse on "the first few years" and then improved. Since they started this production run in 1997, is 2000 the beginning of the better (more trouble-free) versions?
