Fault mode for coolant tank pressure cap? 850 1994

Hi Group:

Is there a "typical" fault mode for the coolant tank pressure cap? I ask because last week our '94 850 Turbo boiled over for no reason I've been able to find. My wife had the car, and didn't think to look at the temp gauge, but the coolant level was probably too low after it boiled over. The thermostat checks OK, but I replaced it anyway, the temp sensor was OK, but I also replaced that, and the fan circuits and fan work as they should. My only guess is that the relatively new pressure cap (~16 mos, ~10K miles) suddenly allowed the system to depressurize. About 1/2 gallon of coolant was lost, and the car was towed home, but now that it's back on the road all seems OK.

Is there a better cap available than the OEM Volvo (green)? I've seen on a few autoparts vendor sites that a Stant cap is available, but in pictures it looks identical to the OEM. Is it different, or just a re-boxed OEM?

Thanks in advance,

Dean
