popping sound out of rear (and it's not gas) 850

needed some help with a weird popping sound that comes out of the rear of my 97 850. it only happens when the car has been sitting around for awhile (couple of hours) and it only happens once - until the car sits again for awhile.
any clue what this could be? your input is kindly appreciated.
