Broken odometer NOT - what now?

All of the instruments (gas gauge, engine temp., speedometer, odometer, trip odometer, tachometer, clock) in my 1995 850 wagon died. My trusted mechanic could not fix it because he said the board was blown and would need programming. I went to the dealer as he suggested. The dealer fixed it.

When I got it home, the odometer and trip odometer didn't work. After checking it, the dealer said I needed to replace the odometer. He told me I could get an odometer from Volvo with the same miles currently on my car for $273 and that they would install it for free since they had made a mistake. I had them order the odometer.

About a week later, the "broken" odometer started working again! Should I go ahead with the repair. Am I being ripped off? Any suggestions?
