Upper engine oil leak

'98 V70 AWD, 90K miles. I have noted some oil that collects on the bottom of the timing belt cover and seems to come from near the exhaust cam seal. This weekend the leak apparently became enough to cause some oil to get thrown back to the exhaust as to create a smell and rare smoke after getting off the highway after a long drive. The firewall side of the head? has oil along its length along the joint that both stains it and you can see on your fingertip when you wipe it. I am now at a loss as to explain where the oil is truely coming from. Could this be the exhaust cam seal and blowing or traveling along seam to the middle and driver's side of the engine? A bad gasket? Both? I lose no appreciable oil, see no oil in the coolant, and have no driveability issues. The rear main seal was replaced about 4K miles ago and is dry as can be now.
