How far into the 70 series is the seat leather interchangeable? 850 1997

Seat leather on a friend's 96 turbo is shot. How far into the 70's series can you strip out the leather and make it work, color by the side? I don't know when Volvo did a redesign on the seats. In 2001, when they did the major body change, or will that fit on an 850 as well? Does anybody know for sure? Would be a big help to a lot of us out there to know what years after 97 we could strip out the bottom leather from a blown seat and still use. Dick
