1996 850 Fuel Filler Door 850 1996

The fuel filler door on my spouse's 1996 850 GLT sedan won't open! I seem to remember that the door locks with the central locking system. Am I wrong about this? Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to get the door open without doing any damage? I am not familiar with the mechanism that keeps it shut so I don't know what to try.
