Rear Main Seal? V70-XC70

Just today noticed engine oil on garage floor. Looks to be at trans./engine joint.1998 V70 with 115,000 miles, all maint. schedules observed, Castrol 10/30 full synthetic oil. Florida car.
I was aware 850's had this leak at RMS, does Volvo not correct problems during production? This is a big leak, the size of a footprint, car used very little oil between changes @ 5,000 miles. It is now down a quart with a change due in 1k miles.
This is very disheartening.

Any expeiences? Zed in Palmetto, Fl.
