Sway bar on '96 850R 850

Do any of you have a 850R with broken sway bar? I've been told by my dealer that it's because of those famous Seattle pot holes that the sway bar is broken. This sounds suspicious to me. A friend of mine believes that it's probably due to a defective part. I don't know what I need to do to claim this. Any advice/suggestions? Thanks.
