intermittent brake light 850

on my 97 850, the deck lid brake light (the third brake light at the bottom of the rear window) doesn't light up consistently when braking. i've replaced the bulb, but still sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. does anyone have a clue as to what's going on? thanks in advance
