Alternator woes???? S70 1998

I've never had an alternator go out on a vehicle before (honestly, the 7 years I've had this car is far and away the longest I've owned one).

What are the typical symptoms?

No charge to the battery? (i.e. - car will jumpstart fine...barely keep an idle...but run if gassed...)

And...how difficult is it to replace the alternator? I can get one for pretty cheap right down the road from me at Volvo dissassembly.
