Open type air intake/filter 850

I have seen other volvo 850's with a short ram intake or open air intake/filter, replacing the stock filter and I want to know what size of filter I need to buy. I am not sure if it's a 3", 3.5", 4" filter size that would be compatible with the air intake pipe. Has anyone replaced their air filter with the open type please advice. I heard it can increase the HP by 10-15 plus the filter is reusable/washable.
