A/C runs fine for 5-10 minutes then turns off and won't reengage 850

Not sure if anyone can help me with this one, but my A/C blows nice cold air when it's working. The compressor cycles on and off like normal then seems to get stuck in the off position. I can't find an association with this problem and anything else (engine rev, outside temp, inside temp etc).

If I then turn off the climate control A/C switch (from "auto" to "off") and leave it for 10 or 15 minutes, when I put it back to "auto" it will reengage again and work for another 10 minutes or so.

I've called my local shop and they think it's a bad compressor. Before I dish out a bazillion dollars on a compressor I was hoping to get a second opinion from the readers of this board.

Any magic bullets?
