How reliable are new Volvo's? S40-V40

Hi,
It's time for a new car. I have experience with old Volvo's, (122's, 140's, 1800's...1968-1972)but no knowledge of the newer ones. I am thinking of looking at the S40/V50, but need a low maintenance, reliable, and long lasting car. I think a Volvo will be long lasting, ...but are they low maintenance and reliable???
