brake indicator 850

Hi,
My indi mechanic changed my brakes( pads/resurface rotors) last April 2004. How would i know if i need to change them again? Is there an indicator?
Car runs great, brakes good although lately i notice my pedals are not as high as before. No sqealing sound or no shudder of whatsoever.
