Volvo 440 Si 400

I have a volvo 440Si with the CVT gearbox. I am having problems with this. Select D and the car moves very slowly and eventually picks up.As long as I maintain a reasonable speed the car will motor along.But if I slow down to much it takes for ever to get going again.It seems like the clutch is slipping badly on a conventional gearbox.What can I do to rectify this problem and what is the likely cause. Thank you.
