99 S80 Alternator problem. S80 1999

I think the alternator on my S80 is bad. It is only putting out 10.5 volts at an idle. When I was looking up the part online I noticed that you can buy the regulator seperately. Does anyone know if they are 2 seperate parts or is it part of the alternator that can be replaced? Many years ago American cars had these as seperate devices. Also, if anyone has a few tips on replacing the alternator it would be appreciated.
