My V40 is has a mind of its own S40-V40 2000

My v40, while idling and driving (usually coasting downhill) will surge on its own. The RPMS go to about 2500 while at idle and the surge can be suppressed by a light touch of the brake. During this time the temperature guage goes up and down pretty rapidly. Any thoughts, its kinda spooky when driving. Otherwise the car runs OK.
