I had the steering shaft u-joint go on my 240. Stiff steering is one possible symptom. On my car, the steering went from very tight to very loose as I was driving the car. Needless to say, this was very scary!
As I recall, to test the u-joint enlist another person to turn the steering wheel (car on the ground) slowly back and forth while you place your hand on the shaft near the u-joint. See if you "feel" any binding of the u-joint as the shaft spins in your hand. If needed, you can do a search for more info on the BB.
My new (to me) 95 850 had the same stiff steering problem when I bought it in November. I fixed it by spraying WD-40 into the joint and worked it in by turning the wheel almost lock to lock for a few minutes. Spray liberally. Even if this doesn't solve your problem it is a good maintenance practice!
This didn't help my 240, the joint was gone. Damaged and corroded...
