4sp == DEXRON III
5sp == 3309
It seems though, that while DEXIII is not /forwards/ compatible with 3309, it will probably work out fine the other way around.
It sounds like it's all down to friction modifiers in the oil - 3309 is pretty much DEXIII loaded with friction modifiers, while DEXIII has basically none.
As such, the fully synthetic universal fluids that claim compatibility with both are likely the highly friction modified variety and they're relying on DEXIII transmissions to not care too much about that. Which is probably not a terrible assumption.
My research on this is limited so maybe I'll really look into this and report back.
Bottom line - it probably won't hurt your 4sp/DEXIII trans to have 3309 fluid (don't take that to the bank though - I'm assuming no responsibility for your transmission or anything else) but it would likely be pretty bad to put DEXIII in your 5sp/3309 trans.
