Usually there is a lip on the outer edge of the rotor. If it is more than 2 mm, I replace the rotor.

As for struts/shocks, it depends on what kind of driving you do. The OEM Sachs/Boge do OK for moderate stuff. I put Koni sports on my R. A lot of people like Bilsteins, which I have on my 67 wagon.
