EMISSION VALVE? XC90 2005

I changed the tranny fluid in my V8, and a small valve (solenoid- it has a detachable elec. socket, and three 13mm dia. hoses) broke into two pieces. It's located just behind the air box, and one of the hoses attaches to an chrome-finished electric pump mounted on the radiator support. I got the valve back together, but noticed that the electric pump ran full-time. The pump stopped when I unplugged the valve.

1) What's this valve, and what does it do?

2) What's the pump?
