There were two versions, Mk. I had full-circle holders which held drinks pretty well but broke easily, Mk. II has half circles that don't hold the cups as well but are more difficult to break. I first broke the Mk. I, fixed it w th epoxy, a Dremel, and nylon screws and it finally wore out. So I replaced it with the Mk. II.
Yes, they are awful. However they're easy enough to replace yourself with a TORX screwdriver, I think they're about $40 from one of the discounting Volvo dealers like Nils Sefeldt or Verrigni Marine (see pull-down menu, "Volvo Shops" - "Parts". Yes, it should be about $20, but it's a Volvo, remember?) A friendly man or woman dressed in a brown uniform will bring it right to your door. At $100, your dealer must be including the part, the labor, a cup of coffee for the technician (to test the cupholder?) and some lubricant, and not just for the cupholder.
It didn't take ME an hour to replace it, and I'm a congenital klutz!
