Not unusual really V70-XC70

It's not something that happens to newer cars, it happens to older, high mileage cars usually. I've seen it happen with all Volvos when they get old and other makes of cars too.
Once those shoes are replaced, they'll probably last the life of your car.

In reality, with dual resevior master cylinders used since the early-mid '60s on ALL cars, even if you have a brake line or caliper failure where fluid pressure is lost, you'll still be able to stop the car w/o ever needing your e-brake.
