All of what you describe above is pretty typical over time. Unfortunately for you, even though the car had not yet exceeded Volvo's 80k km warranty limit, it passed the four year mark, so the ABS was not covered under warranty.
European cars require higher than average maintenance. At least, that is my experience after one VW, one BMW and 4 Volvos. If it makes you feel any better, I spent $1600 at the dealer in one pass recently to have the A/C fixed. And I still have blinking lights on the dash at startup. I must say, though, that the past 18 months have been pretty much problem-free.
My wagon now has 175k km on the odometer.
