Simon,
I just did this on my '99 V70, I had to get at the A/C compressor to replace the clutch.
First, you have to get the power steering pump out of the way. There are 3 bolts that attach it to the mounting bracket on the engine. You can get to these through holes in the pulley. If you move the coolant tank and p/s tank to the top of the engine, you will not have to disconnect the hoses.
Next, you have to remove the one bolt that attaches the top of the alternator to the mounting bracket on the engine and the top 2 A/C compressor bolts that pass through the bottom of the alternator casting.
If you remove the the top 2 compressor bolts and then loosen the bottom 2, the A/C compressor will rotate forward and alternator will come free from the engine. You then have to reposition it so that it will come out through space between the engine, radiator hose and the box for the computer modules. It's a real tight fit but it wiil come out!
Let me know if you need more details.
