It's not as easy as it used to be in the old days.
In the old days there were only a few wires where the bulk of electricity was carried to the battery and from the alternator.
If you want to measure what the alternator output is, then you install the amp meter in series with the main big cable coming out of the alternator.
If you want to measure the battey health, then you install a voltmeter in parallel to one of the main ignition switched sources.
Get a wiring diagram for your car and select a point where to make your connections.
