i've seen a similiar speed sensor problem in an s40. the wire to the sensor was pinched so badly near the connector, it was nearly broken off. just enough strands to pass current sometimes, but not all the time. it's a bear to reach, i'd suggest it to whoever looks at the car next time.

fyi-i do this for a living, not at a dealer. this car took the owner 4 trips before we found it. good luck, chuck.
