My first Volvo was my wife's (bought new) 1997 854 GLT. I subsequently bought a 2003 Passat GLX. I sold the Passat last year and bought a 1997 855 T5. I love these cars. VW...seats are not even close. Volvo wins hands down. The GLT, even though hp is similar to the GLX (193 vs 190)...has more torque and and feels more powerful. I won't be in a VW in the forseeable future. I am sold on Volvo.
