Volvo going slower

PARIS (Reuters) - Volvo Cars said on Monday Α/4/2019] it will introduce a 180 km per hour (112 mph) speed limiter on all new vehicles as the Swedish automaker seeks to burnish its safety credentials and meet a pledge to eliminate passenger fatalities by 2020.

Will they change all of the speedometers to end at 120mph? Instead of the current 160mph(280Km)?

Germans will probably complain because they will no longer be able to cruise in the left lane on the Autobahn.

Makes sense to me. Apart from being illegal there is nowhere in the UK where it would be safe to travel above 112mph, in fact I'd say 80mph is the limit (70mph is the maximum legal speed and only on motorways). People driving above 80mph on German autobahns are dangerous imv. Regards.

I love the Autobahn. I had rented an XC90 D5 and plugged the cruise control at 140K (86mph) and only had to worry about the Audi's in the left hand lane. The Germans all obeyed the laws and had cars that were safe at speed.

Unlike Europe, most of the States here do not have strict safety standards. Many of the cars and pickup trucks on the road are unsafe at any speed. Worthless shocks, rust, dented body panels, smoking exhausts, cracked windows, overloaded, and cruising in the left lane with none of the mirrors adjusted properly. We have large trucks passing each other on divided highways, at 1 mph difference in speed - not fun when they encounter a hill and the truck being passed gains on the truck in the left lane, and both traveling well below the speed limit.

We also do not have any driver training for the 16-18 year olds. It is left to the parents?? My daughter took driver's education during high school - what a joke! They never taught the class common sense driving techniques, the children got behind the wheel for a few hours. Never any panic braking, crash avoidance, just drive to the Interstate, get in the left hand lane, go back to school.

I was in South Dakota, two lane roads and speed limit at 60mph, when I came up behind two large tractor trailers doing the speed limit. The road was curvy and hilly. I saw that the road was clear ahead for a bit and passed both of them. By the time I reached the 2nd truck, I noted that the speedometer was at 115mph and climbing. I let off the gas when I got past the 2nd truck and coasted back down to 65mph. I don't like to stay in the opposing lane, especially when there are "blind" stretches ahead.

Yes, American trucks can be quite scary on the Interstates. My experience is that they seem to drive above the speed limit and come up to your rear bumper. Also people drive far too close to each other, although it's the same in Europe. However trucks (and buses) here have a lower legal speed limit than cars on motorways and stick to it and may only use the inner two lanes (typically three lanes) so you can always pass them. There is the problem in the UK that many car drivers tend to stay in the middle or outer lane but not so in France. The French drive too close but do pull back into the inner lane quickly. The speed limit on French autoroutes is 130kph (80 mph) in dry weather, which I find quite comfortable. Regards.

I liked the 85mph speedo on my first 240, an '82. It wasn't good for much more than 85 while going downhill with a tailwind anyway. Smaller speed range made the the gauge easier to read and the faster needle gave the illusion of acceleration (if you watched only the needle and not your surroundings).

A 140 or 160mph speedo in a car limited to 112? That would piss me off.
I can get over the 112 speed limit after a moment or two. Definitely not a dealbreaker for me. Would it get me a discount on insurance?

Me too!

Didn't you guys have 80MPH speedoes in the 1970's so 55 was well around?

I saw it in Smokey and the Bandit. The truck's speedo went to 90mph.

Germans won't complain, they just won't buy them.
