Not sure what welding tools/machines you have at your disposal but my son took one of mine to his welding class last year and patched up a few things for me. He used a flux core TIG (or was it MIG) welder and it worked on even the thinnest body metal. I'm an old school guy (stick or gas)just learning about all the new welding tools available out there. I was amazed at what was possible. The welding instructor was very helpful and enjoyed having a real project for the kids to work on vs. welding one plate to another. Gave them a practical application for their nascent skills. You may want to check this option out if you do not have your own equipment. ---rick
