Finally got around to removing the Pitman arm and shaft.........took some muscles, but I got it out. Here's a few tips for anyone about to take this project on.
1. Get and adequate/correct puller first. Pickle forks may cause unnecessary damage.
2. Be sure to mark the Pitman arm and Box for reassembly purposes.
2. Removing the nut on the Pitman will take a great deal of leverage.....HINT - use a long breaker bar. Not sure of how much torque was on it, but it took all of my 210Lbs to get it loose. Removing the Tie Rods is not necessary.
3. Remove the radiator, you won't be able to lift the next item without doing so.
4. Remove the top 4 bolts on the steering box
5. Once you've done that, the top of the steering box will lift right out along
with the shaft.
6. Be sure to clean everything up and do a thorough inspection of the splines and
all components. I got very lucky and mine were in great shape.
7. Wash your hands.
8. Go grab your favorite adult beverage and celebrate your victory in taking this
on by yourself, it's not terribly difficult.
