On 88 and later 700 series the stub axles are noticeably heavier and the updated hub functions as the outer bearing race. Some brickboarders report that the bearings in some of these hubs can be replaced, but I have no experience with this. The installation procedure is to use a new nut and torque to 74ft-lbs (100Nm), and then tighten and additional 45 degrees.
