Vent tube, or worse it may be the actual filler tube at the nozzle opening.
That opening occasionally gets out of round. When it does the gas cap does not seat properly. Look at the filler tube opening, check if it is round. Also take your gas cap off and remove the rubber seal and place it over the filler tube opening. If it does not match exactly the round opening, then it is leaking back into the trunk . I have replaced my filler tube years ago for this reason. No more gas smell.
Recently, I dropped my tank (because for the life of me I could not find the gas leak). I replaced my gas lines (all of them). Still had the gas smell.
I took my filler tube off, spent several hours making it round again. and guess what? No more gas smell.
The filler tube gets bent out of round because it is a soft metal and the gas nozzels bend it if you are not careful.
Have fun
