Wishbone and balljoint fitting 200

Just two quick questions. I bought new front-end bushings from IPD including one left and one right rear wishbone bushing. When I finally had time to take the wishbones off and take them to the shop I couldn't find the bushings and had to buy some from my local dealer. They weren't marked "left" or "right" and were Pearl not Scan-Tech. Anyone know if "pearl" is a decent brand? I thought I had remembered wrong about left and right being different and had the shop press them in.

I now noticed in my Bentley that the left and right are different and not interchangeable. Looking at the ones pressed in they are indeed different on the rear facing end. What should I do? I forgot to mention that I have now actually found the original ones I bought :-(

Baljoints! When I took the old ones out the were turning fine but when I tighten the new ones to the housing it wont turn. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks a lot for any opinions on this! I'm doing a lot of work to the Volvo these weeks that I've never tried before but I'm getting there slowly.

Thanks a lot for this, I'll start assembling it then :-)

The balljoints are the correct angled type but I can't turn the housing and joint by hand when the nut is tightened. If that's normal I'll just fit it.

If you have aftermarket ball joints (which I would never use, Volvo only!), then there could be two different types depending on the year of your 240. The early ones had matching left and right ball joints, and later (-79?) had different ones for left and right, the difference being the connection to the lower A-arm is swept backwards giving the alignment a different castor setting. Many aftermarket ball joints are universal, without the bend in the mounts. These should not be used on the 240's that need the angled mount.

If you mean that the ball joint itself cannot move in it's socket, this is normak for a new ball joint that is tight. It should be difficult to swivel and position to the A-arm and not swing around freely.

The rear cup bushings are the same for right and left. There is an orientation which should be considered, keeping the rubber web or tabs the same orientation as the old ones (rotation).

you have to tighten the nut on the balljoint in a vise before you install it and screw in the 4 bolts.

I beleve that later bushings were same for right and left (at least the Boge brand I got from FCP Groton...). Couldn't tell right from left so I installed them as per markinsg and so far no worries.

Anyone? Car is undriveable at the moment and I'm reluctant to tighten evrything if the bushings are the wrong way around.
Is there anyway to identify left and right bushing or should I just take them down to the shop and have the IPD ones pressed in?

Thanks in advance

I believe that Left-Right distinction is something from the past. For years now, all aftermarket suppliers that I know of supply just one part # for both sides.

That may be just to simplify their inventories, but is standard practice as far as I know, even though my 1992 Volvo OE parts book does show separate part numbers for Left vs Right:

1359812-3 Left
1273778-9 Right

I'd say to go ahead and use what you have.
