May this find you well. On a 1993 940, you will need to check:
Fuses 17-18: High Beams
Fuses 19-20: Low Beams
Fuse 10: Sunroof
Fuse 8 Power Windows.
The common point among all these: there is a ground point (No. 31/10 on the wiring diagram). This ground point is behind the tan plastic panel, just in front of the passenger side door (USA/Canada models). The ground point is dull silver metal. It is attached to the body metal. It has several "tabs", onto which female spade type connectors are attached. If these connectors or the "tabs" are corroded, things top working.
To access this ground point:
(a) Remove the battery negative cable clamp and put it in a plastic bag to isolate it. Leave the ignition in the "off" position (key out of the lock) This is standard operating procedure, when doing electrical work on these cars. Be sure to have your car's radio security code, as cutting-off the power supply activates the radio's anti-theft circuit. You'll need to input this code, to restore radio function. If you do not have the code, phone a Volvo dealer's service department and give them the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). They'll be able to give you the code for the radio (presuming the radio is the original). If it is not, you'll have to remove the radio, and give them the unit's serial number.
(b) remove the small rectangular plastic cover plates on the threshhold strip. These cover plates are about 3/4" wide and 1 1/4" long. Use the edge of a plastic putty knife to lift them. Underneath you'll see Torx head screws (T20 or T25). Remove them, and then remove the threshhold strip.
(c) Remove the plastic panel, just forward of the front, bottom corner of the door opening. Note: plastic gets brittle with time and heat. Be gentle. This panel has an extension at its top edge (closest to you), that goes under the plastic doorway cover. Pull down gently on the panel, to get this extension out. Then, pull back (towards the rear of the car) to slide the panel off of the bracket, which keeps it in place.
(d) You can identify the ground point, because it will have several black or black/white wires attached to it. Some of these black wires may have short red sleeves (with white lettering on them).
(e) If you cannot access the ground tab, because a large aluminum box - the engine computer - is in the way, you can gently remove the connector to the computer, and then remove the computer, by removing the two T-20 screws that secure it. DO NOT remove this computer, until the negative battery cable clamp has been removed from the battery terminal and has been put in a plastic bag. You MUST then wait 30 minutes, to allow the discharge of any capacitors in the Computer. When you're done, re-install the computer, and only then reconnect the negative battery cable clamp to the battery terminal.
(f) Inspect the grounding tab and the connectors. If any seem corroded, treat them with a corrosion remover, which you can get at an auto parts store. Once you have cleaned them, re-attach the battery negative cable clamp to the terminal. See what - if anything works - that did not work.
(g) If this does not restore functionality, you'll need to trace each circuit. It is possible someone did some work on the car, and cut one or more ground wires. If that's the case, you'll need the Volvo wiring diagram to trouble-shoot this. It is available at www.volvotechinfo.com.
