just wondering what the general consensus is on overload springs for a 700 sedan
i need to replace the rear springs (stock shocks are still good) on my 764 (non-nivomat, solid axle) and im thinking about getting overload springs. ill be driving in may with all my stuff (i.e. i'll be grossly overloaded) from montreal to texas (about 2000 miles). otherwise i dont plan on hauling heavy loads.
im wondering do i need to pay the extra 100$ for those overload springs from ipd that i'm only going to need once? or can i stay with stock springs?

Speaking from my 200 sedan. It wouldn't be an extra $100.. I thought the total price of the springs is $100.
If you need Springs anyway then the price delta shouldn't be too much more.
You can get by without the Overload Springs for the one trip but I put them in my 200 and it is basically unloaded 90% of the time. I recommend them if you are replacing the springs anyway. I don't think they feel harsh when they are unloaded at all.
So even after your trip, you will be fine with them back there.

Hi Fred, I used a set of "Heavy Duty Wagon Springs" in my sedan
for a little while. When there was a lot of stuff in the car, it
would ride great but the ride was harsh when the car is empty.
I switched in standard Sedan springs after a while because I dont
normally carry a lot of stuff. I still have the wagon springs,
and they would make your ride a whole lot nicer for the trip. If
you're interested, I could make you a deal on the Heavy Duty springs,
and you can use them on your trip, and then swap them out when you're
done.

Robert Ludwick has it right: Harsh for 200,000 miles (I have overloads on a 745), or load thoughtfully for 2,000. Hmmm... that's a tough one. ;-)
Take your heavy stuff (cast iron skillets, books, tools, etc.) and load them in the forward passenger footwell. When full start adding similar to rear passenger footwells. Why? The FRONT springs are 2-3x the rate of the rear springs (look it up). Keep loading the front springs, and then the rear, and keep heavy stuff out of the trunk, where its leverage really afflicts the rear springs.
I have used this technique when moving thousands of pounds of cast iron sash weights, with Toyota and Volvo wagons. Um, not all at once, though. ;-)
This is tougher, obviously, if you have passengers.

If you're not going to need them on a regular basis, they'll make it ride a bit hard. might want to look around the boneyard for a set of wagon springs. They're a bit stouter than sedan springs, but still ride nice.

thx

No, Just bolt them on. I have a set on my '93 940t sedan, it really helps when pulling a trailer ( not as much as overloads would, but I have a rather heavy trailer )

How is the ride with standard wagon springs in a sedan?

The ride is excellant. I have a degenerating spine condition where I can't handle a harsh ride ..at all. The wagon springs along with a set of monroe sensa trac shocks ride great and handle very good as well, handling on mountain roads better than the original setup.
I have moog cargo coils on my 240 wagon they handle more load ( when i hook my travel trailer up you can't even tell, my 940 drops about 1.5-2 inches), but are a bit rough if I don't have it loaded down a bit. that said, cargo coils usually arent as harsh as other overload springs.
