Transmission will not start from Drive 700 1990

The transmission will not start off in Drive but, manually shiftes through the gears OK. Same thing when hot. Fluid is level and clean. Any ideas. Thanks

Could be the linkage is out of whack whereby you only think that it is in drive when it's really still in neutal at the transmission.
