Clutch cable 140-160 1974

Hello,
I'm just about ready to go with my replacement of the old BW35 with an M41 transmission. I'm perplexed though at how the clutch cable is held in place through the firewall. The cable sheathing terminates in a threaded collar that goes through the firewall--and the cable hooks to the clutch peddle all right. But I can't turn a nut on the end of the sheathing because the cable stirrup is too big for a nut to pass. And I can't find a similar car at pick n pull to view, so I'm relying on someone out here who knows. What's the secret? Or perhaps it doesn't really need to be tightened to stay in place (which is what I'll be finding out by default!) Hope I made my question clear.
Thanks in advance of your help.
Linc

Sounds like you have a cable that isn't to specification?

Personally, I don't bother putting that nut on, instead, I flick the spring off of the clutch pedal & let the weight of the clutch pedal hold the cable in place. This makes the spring on the clutch fork mandatory but the end result is a clutch that feels better because the free play is much less & more consistent. Only downside is that your clutch pedal won't be pulled up against it's stop which means it won't be level with the brake pedal(if that actually matters).

Finally got around to trying your method, and it seems to work just fine! I've had the additional problem of using a B21 flywheel in place of the B20. The B21 is 3/8" thinner giving me other problems that I finally solved by shimming out the clutch fork mount that extra 3/8 of an inch (thanks to another brickboarder's sage advice)! Next stop: the test drive!
