After the recent harness transplant the vent buttons don't work. How do these things work? Would the harness have anything to do with it?

You probably disturbed the vacuum feed into the passenger compartment. Check out this post regarding cleaning the check valve
that feeds the circuit. It should point you to the vacuum line you've disturbed.
