i'm putting a new (junkyard new) transmission in my 1989 740 GL. its an AW70 trans. i'm going to totally drain the trans and change the filter, how many quarts of trans fluid will i need?

Apprx 8. Buy 10 to 12 to flush from the radiator cooling lines after you install to flush everything. Clean the pan and gasket while out obv. Good luck

Hi 89740GL:

The Sweedish guy is right. Power flush from the upper transmission line. Disconnect it at the Radiator and connect it to a 5 gallon container with a hose. Add fluid at the same rate as the expelled fluid. 10-12 qts should do it. You'll notice it get steadly redder. Works like a charm.

Change your filter and gasket first. Then add 2qts before you start. I have 2 ZFs but the procedure is the same.

By most accounts there's no need to remove/replace the screen on an AW, I understand Volvo even dropped that from their service recommendations because there was so little debris that ever accumulated there.
