240 Check Engine light is on 200 1989

The Check Engine light just came on for the first time since I got my 1989 244. I do not know a lot about these cars, but I was wondering what sort of problem usually causes this light to come on.
Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Go to the 700/900 FAQ for code retrieval info 200 1989

See the --select link-- button at upper right. Look at the FAQ contents listing for OBD or OBDI. Your '89 engine and codes are the same as 700/900cars with LH 2.4 fuel injection and EZ116K ignition. ('89 was the first year for 240s)

Hard to believe....neither informed you that you have a scanner, of sorts, under the hood....know as OBD (On Board Diagnostic). In engine compartment, in front of driver side, tucked in the corner by the big round thing (brake servo), and the spring for the hood, is a small black box. The cover comes off, and you will see a small red light (not lighted), a small button, and six holes, plus a probe attached to a wire. Check this boards archives for how to read the codes. The codes will tell you why the check engine light is on. For what it is worth, my "check engine" light was on when I bought my 89, 245 (173K miles). According to the OBD I should replace my oxygen sensor. I have yet to do that, light is still on, car runs really fine (31 mpg highway), and strong at 315K.

Pick up a Bently Volvo repair manual, or a Haynes Volvo repaire manual. You'll find it comes in handy, and most of the maintenance you can do.

    Enjoy.

      slightly off topic here...

31 mpg?! I have an 88 240DL and a 90 240DL -- I have yet to see better than 24mpg highway on either of them.

"Coolvolvo" may be right....315K miles, and 'Olegray' runs better than at 173K. Oh yeah, I swapped out the auto tranny for a M47, around 200K.

        I also get 30-31 mpg highway on an '89 5-speed, 230K miles.
I swear they get better with age...

Yeah, sometimes I get 32. Just divide the miles on the trip meter by what you fill up. Sometimes I get 23. Sometimes I get 55 when I forgets to push the trip reset.

The "What's wrong" info is derived from a 3 digit code. The code is stored in the computer, and a scanner is needed to get it. Got to an AutoZone or other parts house and see if they will scan it for you.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

A scanner?! I can't believe you wrote that. And after the diatribe against devoted junkyard "divers". Not the BC I thought I knew ;)
