cold start injector test 200

So i ran that little system test that you can run from the built in code box under the hood in my girlfriends 92 240. I could here the regular injectors clicking away, but when it came time for the ssystem to test the cold start injector..nothing. Should I hear a clicking from this injector or is it normal to hear nothing? If nothing is normal, then how do I know if it is working? Seems like the car is not starting and idling all that well when its cold out. cold start or just throttle body?

Thanks for the help,

Mike

Thanks for all that info guys, great stuff. It probably doesn't even have one, the reason i thought it did was that it was listed as part of that diagnostic test. Now I will certainly check for it physically and just go after the other more common things first. Does anyone know why they got rid of that injector? Did the system work well in the older cars?

Thanks again,

Mike

They probably got rid of it to save money since injectors are expensive and they got the computer to do the same thing using the regular injectors.

My understanding is that the 951 computer increases the frequency and or duration of opening of the regular four injectors when it is very cold, thereby providing extra fuel just as the cold start injector would.

My '89 already had a 951 in it when I purchased it, but last Winter I found a 561 (pink label) at the pick-n-pull and bought it to have as a spare. I installed it for a few weeks and noticed that even though my car started ok when it was very cold, there was a noticable delay before it would "catch". When I put the 951 back in, it went back to starting immediately, so in my case, I would say that the 951 does a better job with four than the 561 does with five.

If the car has a cold start injector (many don't), they don't work until the temperature drops to 14ºF. When the cold start injector does work, it will open once, and shut once. You won't hear any clicking like on the cylinder injectors. Since the cold start injector (if present), is on the bottom of the intake manifold, it is going to be quite difficult to hear it click open and click shut in its single operation.

According to the Volvo wiring diagram in the Bentley manual, the '92-'93 240s don't have a Cold Start Injector.

'91 appears to be the last year for it.

Mike,

If you have a CSI, you will see an extra fuel line coming off near the rear of the fule rail on the engine side. It will curve around in a U, back up to the bottom of the intake manifold where the injector would be. But even if they still physically had the injector in '92, I have it on the best of authority (Art Benstein) that the 951 computer, which your car should have, doesn't utilize it. So I presume it wouldn't run that injector in the diagnostic series either. My '89 has that computer and it's been starting beautifully all week when the weather has been below zero here in the mornings (and sometimes the afternoons too).

I think you should consider more basic items like cap, rotor, ignition wire, spark plugs, all of which will misbehave more when it's cold. Also (and I can't explain this), my experience has been that a leaking fuel pressure regulator can cause problems when it's below freezing out.

Was the engine cold? I'm pretty sure it won't operate unless the engine is cold.
