940/960 Single piston Girling caliper compatiable with 89 740? 700 1989

Are the late model single piston Girling front brake calipers found on 940/960/S90 models compatiable with an 89 744T with Girling 4 piston calipers?
Are the disk radii the same or did the later models have bigger disks? Do the mounting brackets have the same spacing?

I'm at the point of rebuilding the calipers again and thinking there must be a better caliper that Volvo switched to with all the problems these had.

Thanks,
Eric

I completed this conversion to "Jumbo" brakes. Wow! What a difference! Such smooth application and no more rattling, and hopefully no more caliper rebuilds and rotor warping. I got Zimmerman cross drilled rotors - very cool.

    Thanks for the help.

Oops, I meant 2 piston calipers, of course. I think my brain was thinking 4 in total.

The 740 never had 4 piston calipers like the 240. I guess it was the start of the penny pinching for Volvo, too bad. B.G.

Yeah, those 4 piston non-floating calipers must be nice. Don't think they're compatiable with 740's, though, too bad.

These things have always given me grief. Should have done this upgrade a long time ago.

Do you have to rebuild the 4 piston ones often?

    Morbius:
I was going to install the Jumbo brakes in my 89 740, but the 15" Virgo wheels from the 240 series I prefer did not allow the upgrade. If you decide to go for it, I have the correct brackets for Girling calipers and the 11.5" rotors( for one piece hub) that I will sell cheap. Let me know.

Go to the 700/900 FAQ. Click on Brakes, and then find Brake Upgrades, and click on Upgrading Older 7XX Brakes to Big Brakes or Later 9XX Jumbo Brakes. The information is all there. If you can't understand it, reply to this message and I'll explain.

I have the Jumbo brakes on my 1987 745T, and on my son's 1984 760T.

Ahh, these are the "Jumbo" brakes, ok. Now it's all clear. I was browsing online for parts on later model 940s for upgrades and these caught my eye. I'll have to do this one myself. I assume the brakes were an improvement?

If I buy some reman. calipers they'll bolt right on, correct? Or is there an additional bracket? And it uses a 11" rotor, right?

Thanks John, you always know the scoop.

      Eric
