rear knocking in 240 wagon 200 1993

hello,
thanks for taking a look at my inquiry.
So here's the scoop...
When driving over bumps I get a knocking sound coming from the rear. REminds me of the sound that I heard when my front strut mounts were bad. Bilstein shocks and struts, along with new front strut mounts were put in car within the last two years, but not rear mounts. seems like the rear rides kind of loose too, but maybe this is me just tricking myself into thinking that it's the rear shock mounts. Recently the rear wheel bearings were done, thinking that that may be causing the knocking but no such luck, still the sound is there. I will be replacing the tailgate gas springs also, but I really don't think this is the culprit. Any ideas? most of you are seasoned but for those that don't know this is a rear wheel drive brick. just a teen with 165k. appreciate any replys.

If it's more of a 'light rattle', than a 'rumble', check to see if the tailgate bumpers are worn or improperly adjusted. This was the case on Son's '88 245; simple adjustment to latch mechanism. Naturally, you've already determined whether the sound is a body or suspension noise, but wasn't clear from your description, so I may be well off the mark.

    Good Luck,
    Dennis

If the clunk is evident only when going over bumps, I wouldn't want to guess.
But if you get the clunk on acceleration and also when you let up on the gas -- and also get one going over bumps -- then I, too, would vote for torque rod bushings needing replacement, and maybe rear trailing arm bushings, too.

You seem to be investing some money; maybe you should start with the Bentley manual or at least the Haynes instead of those tailgate struts.

What I can't figure out is how the person who put in the struts (assuming it wasn't you) didn't notice bushing trouble.

it's been a while since I put trailing arm or torque rod bushings in my 84'. Do you have any point of reference for cost for such a job now? seem to remember it was costly on the labor front.

As mentioned, if it only clunks over bumps it could be a variety of things. Maybe something as simple as the 'Rubber Bands' holding your exhaust up. The do break.
Is the back of the car sagging? that is a tell-tale sign that Trailing Arm bushings are very bad.
It's been my experience that at about 150000 miles the rear bushings start to go bad. But that does depend on driving habits and road conditions.

Do not know what mechanic would charge for this. I did the work on my car.

If it is not the torque rod or rear trailing arm bushings, it could be the rear Bilstein shocks. I have a pair of HD's boxed up and ready to return because they are making a thumping noise. They have about 6,000 miles on them. Dan

so how do I decide if it's actually the shocks or if it's bushings? Can I tell by sound or another way without spending loads of cash having mechanic tear it apart? I know the Bilsteins are covered by lifetime warranty but I don't want to take them out to figure out the puzzle if I don't have to. Can bushings be assessed just looking at wear with everything still in tact? Thanks

You can see the condition of the torque rod and lateral rod bushings, but you really can't see the control arm bushings well unless you remove the control arm.

It takes about 15 minutes to remove one control arm, look at the bushings, and replace it.

Since I have an '87, a '90, and a '91 in the family, I have a set of lower control arm bushings in the garage at all times, so if I check and they are bad, I am ready to replace them on the spot. The '87 still has its originals, but it is an automatic and still has less than 200k miles on it. The '91 has nearly 250k miles and I suspect it is about due for its second replacement. The bushings are about $15 each aftermarket and $60 each at the dealer.
